Some hotels impress you immediately.
Others quietly slow you down the moment you arrive.
Hoshi Jungle Resort, tucked into the hills of Tegalalang, Bali, belongs firmly in the second category. I booked this stay through Expedia for around $53 CAD per night, and from the moment I stepped out of the taxi, it felt like one of those places that stays with you long after checkout.
This review reflects my personal experience — what worked exceptionally well, what stood out, and why I would return without hesitation.

First Impressions: Arrival & Welcome
As the taxi approached the resort, the view unfolded slowly — and then all at once. The structure rises from the jungle like a small hilltop sanctuary, dramatic but not overpowering.
Interestingly, both my driver and I looked up at the resort at the same time and said, “Wow.” It felt instinctive.
Tegalalang is known for its rice terraces, and the location feels intentional. You’re far enough from Denpasar to escape the noise, yet still close enough to explore central Bali comfortably.
The welcome set the tone immediately. Staff greeted me with a refreshing drink and calm, genuine warmth. Instead of being rushed through paperwork, I was invited to sit and rest. My luggage disappeared quietly in the background, which felt especially considerate after a long journey.

Room Experience: Elevated, Calm, and Thoughtful
Thanks to Expedia’s VIP Access program, I received a room upgrade. I’ll explain this program in more detail in a separate article, but in short — it made a noticeable difference here.
My room sat high above the resort, offering sweeping jungle views and a private pool. It felt private without being isolated.
Natural light filled the space throughout the day, softening the rustic-chic decor. Wood, stone, and muted tones worked together instead of competing for attention. As a result, the room felt warm and restful rather than styled for effect.
This was the kind of space that didn’t ask much of you — beyond staying present.
Sound, Light & the Rhythm of the Jungle
One of the most memorable aspects of the stay was the soundscape.
Birds. Crickets. The low hum of the jungle settling into itself. It felt less like background noise and more like nature quietly encouraging you to relax.
Sunrise and sunset here are experiences in themselves. Watching the light shift across the jungle from this vantage point is something you don’t rush — and don’t forget.
There’s something undeniably restorative about seeing the day begin and end from above the trees.

Infinity Pool & Hot Tub: Designed for All Conditions
Overlooking the jungle, it’s paired with a spacious hot tub, which makes it just as enjoyable on a rainy afternoon as it is in the cooler evening hours. There’s something particularly grounding about sitting in warm water while mist moves through the trees — the kind of experience that turns weather into atmosphere rather than inconvenience.
Because the resort has a limited number of rooms, the shared spaces never felt crowded. There was no sense of competing for loungers or timing your swim around other guests. It’s a very different rhythm from large all-inclusive resorts, where beautiful facilities can quickly feel overrun.
Here, the pool feels integrated into the environment rather than separated from it.
Massage Experience: In-Room & Well Executed
The massage service also stood out.
The therapist came directly to my room, which many travelers prefer. Personally, I usually enjoy a dedicated spa room or outdoor setting. However, the quality of the massage itself was excellent, and the convenience added to the overall ease of the stay.
For guests who prefer to remain in their own space, this option will feel especially appealing.
A Practical Note: The Liability Waiver
Guests are asked to sign a liability waiver upon arrival. In simple terms, it acknowledges that the resort sits on a hillside and that guests take responsibility for their own decisions around areas like pools and elevated paths.
Given the terrain, this felt reasonable rather than restrictive. If anything, it served as a quiet reminder to stay present and respectful of the surroundings.
Staff, Dining & Nearby Attractions
Throughout the stay, staff remained courteous, attentive, and genuinely warm. Service felt natural rather than scripted, which made interactions easy and relaxed.
The on-site restaurant offered pleasant, well-prepared meals that suited the setting. While dining options nearby are limited, there are attractions within 9 minutes by motorbike, including:
- Crétya
- Uma Ceking
That said, this is very much a place you return to at the end of the day, rather than one you use simply as a base.
Final Thoughts: Would I Return?
Absolutely.
Hoshi Jungle Resort offers something increasingly rare: calm, beauty, and value without excess. At $53 CAD per night, the experience feels exceptional. Even at higher rates, it remains compelling.
Some hotels are simply places to sleep.
Others shift your pace.
This one does the latter — quietly and effectively.
